Difference between Video Poker and Traditional Poker

Which Format Will You Prefer?

Regardless of what your favorite medium is for playing Poker, the game is conceptually the same, whether it is video or the more traditional format.  There are some differences between the two types of games, however.

The first (and most obvious) difference is how the game is set up.  Traditional Poker is set up with a dealer, a deck of cards, and several other players around a large, stylized table.  The video Poker version, however, is set up within a small machine that can easily fit in any part of the casino, or even the bar where you can sit with your drink, watch the football game, and still manage to play.  The game does offer a greater flexibility in where the player wishes to sit.

The game’s format also allows for a more intimate experience.  Eliminating the need for other players and a dealer makes the game a more personal affair.  There are no interruptions or distraction from other players. Also, with the absence of other human players, it eliminates the ability to “bluff”.  There is no way to try and trick a player (and the computer is not going to fall for your feeble attempt to bluff… silly human.)

Actually, this brings us to the biggest difference: it is not going to be possible to beat another hand.  When it comes to video Poker, the goal is to hit payouts set on the best hands from the payout chart. In other words, a pair of jacks or better pays 2-1, two pair pays 3-1, three of a kind pays 4-1, etc etc. That’s what you are trying to get – get a pair of Jacks, and you win – nobody is going to have a better hand than you. In this respect that game is similar to other “payout chart” poker games like Casino Hold ‘Em or Let it Ride poker.

Video Poker is not the social game that traditional Poker is, but is great for more gaming minded people or those trying to learn the intricacies of the game.  The game is a fun way to pass the time, and if you know poker, certainly offers a better payout percentage than slot machines do.

So if you want a solitary, easy-to-learn-and-play game that focuses on strategy, then Video Poker just might be what you are looking for. The next time you go to the casino, give it a shot.
