Betting on Track and Field Events

Betting on track and field? Certainly you jest…

No, we do not jest. While it’s nowhere near as popular as, say, betting on football or soccer, betting on track and field events does happen. While it’s usually is reserved for the bigger events (i.e.: World Championships, Olympic Trials, the Olympics themselves, etc), your local bookmaker (or sports book) just might offer a track and field event to bet on at any given time.

The track and field events are competitions that focus on athletic activities such as running races or quick sprints, throwing events, such as discus, shot put, or javelin, or jumping events, such as hurdles, pole vaulting, or the long jump.  Because of the various events in track in field, there are a number of options in which to place wagers on.

In general terms, the bets are usually tied to individual performers (as in “who will win this event?”), although some venues offer parlay type bets (betting on two events), field bets (bet everyone in a race except the two or three stars), etc. One could also likely bet on which country will take home the most wins, etc. Most bets follow the venue norm – meaning if you are in the UK, the bets will likely be fractional. In the US, you’ll probably see a moneyline, etc.

One of the biggest draws in betting on track and field events are the competitors themselves. During these seasonal summer events, there are several athletes in each event that are quite well known, so there is some real excitement behind an athlete reaching first place.  And, of course, when it comes to the Olympics, there is certainly pride in having one’s country represented, but a little financial incentive never exactly hurt anything either.

In Track and Field betting, research can really help you out. Like in Hockey, it’s possible that the fanatical follower knows more than the bookmakers, so good odds may be present. Research is also important in the events themselves.  What events look the most worthwhile to bet on in this particular venue?  Shot put?  Javelin throws?  Hurdles?

With a little foresight, some good wagers can be made to put a little extra jingle in the pocket, and let you hurdle your way to greater profits (sorry, we couldn’t resist).

Best of luck in all of your betting, and go for the gold!
