Types of Sports Betting: Spread Betting
When it comes to betting on the outcome of a sporting or other live event, one of the great benefits is the sheer number of options that are available to you. And one of the more interesting types of betting is a wager that is known as “Spread Betting”.
So what is spread betting, exactly? Well, there are two definitions.
The first is a kind of bet that does not focus so much on the winning or losing aspect of a wager, but focuses its payoff more on the accuracy aspect of the bet, relative to the strength of the competitors. In other words, we’re talking about the Point Spread.
In general terms, almost any “event” that is bet on is not an even-money affair. There is almost always the likelihood that one side or the other is stronger, and more “favored” to win.
Hence the “spread” – points given to the “underdog” side in terms of gambling.
So why would people want to bet more on a margin of points instead of trying to get as close to the actual score as possible? Well, because one side is favored to win, that’s why. Obviously, people aren’t going to waste time on a “losing” team, and everyone will wager on the winning team. So the spread (point spread) exists to keep wagers as close to equal as possible on both sides. This “evening out”, combined with the Vigorish, usually ensures a profit for bookmakers.
There is an aspect to spread betting in a legal sense. There are some locations / countries (such as the United Kingdom) that attempt to regulate spread betting outside of the gambling commission to make sure that these types of bets do not get out of control and become too costly for the gamblers.
Another use of the term “spread betting” involves gambling on securities. This would involve taking a bet on the price movement of a particular security. Basically, a bookmaker that offers spread bets will quote two prices, the bid price and the offer price, and bettors will bet on whether the price of the particular stock will be lower than the bid, or higher than the offer. It’s essentially a way to play the market without owning stock.
Regardless of the type of spread betting you partake in, it could give you a chance to potentially earn some quick cash either way. Good luck when placing those wagers, and may your intuition show you the money!
