Win, Place, Show, Exacta, Quinella, Trifecta, Superfecta, Box, Double, Triple and Sweep
Horse racing has maintained a large following in North America and its Northern Neighbor, Canada. And part of the reason for that popularity is the myriad of bets available for the interested player.
Here is a breakdown of some of the more popular North American and Canadian bets and what their roles are in the betting field.
- Let’s start with three of the most popular bets: Win, Place, and Show. The Win bet is for the race horse that places first. In a place bet, the winning race horse has to come in first or second (in other words, the bet is won as long as the horse finishes in first or second.) And Finally, the Show bet requires that the winning race horse has to come in first, second, or third place – if it comes in any of those, the bettor can collect their winnings. Obviously, the “show” bet is less risky than the “win bet, but it also pays far less.
- The next types of bets are the Exacta and Quinella bets. The exacta involves correctly picking the first and second horse in the race, in order. The quinella is the same bet, but the order is irrelevant. Obviously, the quinella will pay a little less.
- Next are the Trifecta and Superfecta bets. The Trifecta allows for the placing of three horses in the first, second and third spots in the exact specified order (or, you can usually “box” it for a lesser payoff – then the order doesn’t matter – see below). The Superfecta allows bettors to choose the first four horses to finish the first four positions of a race, in a specific order.
- Another set of bets are the Box, Double, Triple and Sweep bets. The box bets are placed around the Exacta, Trifecta and Superfecta bets, and places a wager for all of the numeric combinations in said box (in other words, the order doesn’t matter then). The Double allows the bettor to pick the winners for two successive races. The triple is the same as the double, but is for three consecutive races. The sweep bet allows for four (or more) consecutive race wins. This is usually also called “Pick Four” or “Pick Six”, and sometimes has rollover jackpots.
As the savvy bettor can see, there are plenty of options in horse racing for North American and Canadians to wager on. Considering how daring a player feels, they can stand to win a lot of money.
