Outside Bets

Red / Black - High / Low - Odd / Even - Dozens, Columns

There two type types of bets in Roulette. First we have the high risk and high payouts of “Inside bets”. These are ideal for the “Let it ride” risk taker crowd.

But for those who like to employ the “Slow but steady wins the pot” betting philosophy we have “Outside bets”. If you take a glance at a Roulette table layout, you’ll see boxes to the outside of the numbers area. These are your “Outside Bets”.

American and European Roulette styles share a remarkable amount of similarity. A number bet is still a number bet in Las Vegas, Morocco or Perth, Australia. The only real difference is the addition of the “00” spot on American Roulette Wheels. However this additional spot gives American style Roulette a higher house edge, so player beware.

  • The first of the Outside bets are the “Even money bets”. This includes the High/Low bets on the low numbers (1 to 18) and high numbers (19 to 26). Red/Black belongs to this group and are bets on the colors - red or black (we’re sure you guessed that one!)  Odd/Even finish up the list and are bets on all the even or odd numbers. All you need to do is place a chip (or chips) in the box outside the number area to make your bet. The boxes are clearly marked with a number range, a color, or the words “Even” and “Odd”. Please note that 0 and 00 or neither red or black, high or low, or even or odd (essentially, there’s your house edge).
  • “Dozen bets” or playing the “Dozens” are bets on either the first, second, or third set of dozen numbers. In the boxes next to the numbers you’ll find the spot for your bet. When you win you get a 2 to 1 payout.
  • “Column bets” or “Columns” are similar to Street bets but you’re betting on a vertical strip of twelve numbers and not a horizontal strip of three. On the bottom of the column will be its betting box. Slap your bet down and enjoy a 2 to 1 payout when you win.

So whether you’re playing it safe and slow or just want to maximize your time, Outside Bets are a good choice. Sure, you won’t turn that $10.00 bet into $350.00 in one spin, but you will be at the table longer with friends (including new ones). And sometimes, that’s exactly what you want.

Have fun, and good luck.
