Straight Up, Split, Street, Corner, Line, Five Number Bet
Betting in Roulette falls into two different type of categories. First are “Inside bets” which are generally higher risk (and higher payout) bets. These are “inside” the main betting area on the Roulette Table. Then you have “Outside bets”, which are lower risk (and lower payout), which are listed outside the number area (hence the name). This article will deal with inside bets.
Worldwide, Roulette is fairly universal in regards to betting . Payouts are similar but the one major difference is the addition of a “00” spot on an American Roulette Wheel. This additional bet gives American Roulette a better house advantage. So if you can choose, always play tables playing European Roulette Wheels (if you can.)
- The first Inside Bet is a “Straight Up bet” or simply a “Straight bet”. It’s a very simple bet to make. Place your bet in the middle of the numbered box (this includes the 0 and 00 spots) and if you win you enjoy a whopping 35 to 1 payout.
- “Split bets”, like the name suggests, split your bet between two touching numbers. Place your table chip (or chips) on the line between two numbers and you win if either number comes up. Since you’re splitting the bet, payouts are nearly half. You get a 17 to 1 payout when you win.
- “Street bets” or “Trio bets” are bets on the three numbers in a row. Place your chip at the end of the row to make this bet. Since you’re splitting a bet three ways the payouts are nearly one third of a Straight bet. You’ll get an 11 to 1 payout on this bet.
- “Corner bets” are bets on a group of four numbers. Place your chip in the middle of the four numbers and enjoy your 8 to 1 payout when you win.
- “Line bets” or “Six Number bets” are similar to Street bets but add another line to the bet. Place your bet at the end of the line between the two rows and you’ll have six numbers that can make you a winner. Payouts are 5 to 1.
- And coming in last, we have a bet you shouldn‘t make. The “Five Number bet” is a bet on the 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3 spots. Place your chip (or chips) where the 2 meets the 0 and 00 and you have a bet with the highest house advantage. Avoid this bet. European roulette will not have this option due to the lack of a 00 spot.
So if “Greater the risk, the greater the profit” is your philosophy, Inside bets are the way to go. Good luck!
