Variations of Texas Hold ‘Em: Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em
Texas Hold ‘Em has a few different types of limit games, such as Spread Limit Hold ‘Em, Limit Hold ‘Em, Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em as well as a few others. Let’s focus on Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em here.
Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em lets you raise any amount up to the amount of the pot. This means if the pot currently has fifty dollars, then you can only raise by fifty dollars. You cannot count your raise to the pot in determining the pot (because, technically, that could go on forever). So if the pot is fifty dollars and you intend to raise it by another fifty, then new limit doesn’t become one hundred until your turn is over. For you, it’s still fifty dollars.
Pot-Limit gives you different levels of freedom compared to Spread Limit Hold ‘Em and Fixed Limit Hold ‘Em. Spread Limit Hold ‘Em allows you to bet anywhere within a fixed range. Fixed Limit usually has a single betting amount. At the beginning of a Pot-Limit game, the small size of the pot may limit big bets, but that problem usually vanishes for most players quickly as the pot grows with bets.
This is a good game to graduate to from fixed limits, as it still somewhat caps things, but to a much lesser degree. Of course there will be some players who don’t enjoy the limits. Players that like to push all of his or her chips in the middle for an “all or nothing” bet will find the limits unbearable. But for the most part, the game is a reasonable compromise between smaller limits, and the “bet your house and first born” tables.
However, you can still bet pretty hefty – here’s how:
In Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em, you can only raise by the pot’s amount. Usually this isn’t an issue for most players or situations. However, you may get a very promising hand at the beginning of the game and want to maximize the pot. In this case you’d like to start raising early (maybe the second round of betting), to raise the limit for other rounds. The hard part will be to bet/raise without triggering suspicion from other players. The best strategy is to be just a bit cautious. Don’t raise the maximum every round: just remember – the pot will grow exponentially. Let’s say the first round comes, and the pot has $10. You bet $8 (not quite the limit as to not scare anyone), and five other players call – now the pot is $58 (the original $10, your $8, and five calls of $8). The next round, you can start raising by at least $58. See what we mean?
Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em is a nice variant with some extra strategy thrown in. We hope you find it fun and challenging during your next poker visit.
