Peeking at Another Person’s Cards (Legitimately)

We’ve seen this topic before on other poker websites, and we just cannot agree with it. Let’s be clear - there is no ethical way to look at another person’s hole cards. That’s all there is to it. It is just cheating in its most base form, and trust us, if you are caught trying to peek, you are in for a long evening.

There are a few ways to tell if someone is attempting to look at other cards.  The most obvious way is when a dealer has the opportunity to see the top card of the deck when dealing out cards.  While obvious, this can become a potent cheating tactic that will make sure that the dealer will always get the best cards.  Another method of peeking can be done by holding the cards in a particular way to allow for quick look at another player’s cards.  In some cases, working with another player can provide an unfair advantage.   The bottom line is, if you’re trying to see what other people have in their hands, there had better be a good reason for it (especially when peeking at Killer Conway’s hand!)

Community card games like Texas Hold ‘Em, however, do allow for some legitimate chances to see what’s in another person’s hand.  But we’re afraid the answer will not excite you – it’s the community cards. These cards are dealt in a face up manner, which means that all players at the table have an opportunity to see these shared hands.  While not a complete picture of a person’s hand, this is a fair way to see what other players are getting dealt, and can start to form a strategy based on that information.  After all, a little bit of a head’s up is better than no head’s up at all.

Finally, while not so much of an advantage to a player, there is the “hole cam”, a camera system that is usually used in televised poker tournaments.  While it shows viewers at home what a specific player’s face down cards look like, it is of no real advantage to the player, as very few people (including some members of production) are not given access to these views. However, it is a good opportunity to learn the game, as it allows you to see how players play the different hands.

In the long run, getting to see what another player has in their hand is something of a rarity; so don’t expect to have this sort of advantage made available to you.  Just maintain confidence in your hand and your abilities, and you’ll be able to claim the pot regardless (and you’ll be able to sleep better at night!)
