Variations of Texas Hold ‘Em: No-Limit Hold ‘Em
If there’s one type of Texas Hold ‘Em game that’s the favored choice of high rollers, aggressive players, and players hoping for that big payout, it’s No-Limit Hold ‘Em. The game is played like the name suggests; Go ahead and raise by any amount you have and can afford. There are no upper limits! You may have to bet at least the minimum bet but the sky’s wide open for whatever you want to risk. Want to throw your car keys in? Well, check with the Pit Boss, but yea, that’s probably a possibility!!
This is the “adult” table, no doubt about it. In fact, the only limit is on the minimums you can bet - usually you must raise an amount that’s equal to the big blind. And if there is a re-raise, then you need to factor in the amount of the previous raise. If a re-raise happens, then the new raise minimum is equal to the big blind plus the last raise. Wow…
Again, when you’re playing no limit, you’re at the adult table. Bring adult money.
No-Limit Hold ‘Em is the current favorite variant for tournament play. This makes a great deal of sense, because the freedom allows for more radical plays, and allows for maximum psychological warfare. Since poker is being heavily promoted these days, and is now even televised, the viewing audience wants to see players make (or attempt) big grabs at money. There’s nothing more exciting than to see someone grab a big pot with glee while forcing out another player; or slump forward with his or her forehead to the table after losing all their chips and their spot at the table.
To give you an idea of No-Limit Hold ‘Em tournament popularity, consider that the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas promotes No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em as the main game. And if anyone knows what makes for good poker, it’s certainly the casino owners in Vegas.
No-Limit Hold ‘Em, while able to be played by any Texas Hold ‘Em fan, is usually the game of experts. Since there are no upper raises, it’s easy for someone to lose their shirt (even in games where clothing isn’t the currency!) Newcomers tend to shy away from the high prices or, if they do try it for a bit, usually get burnt, and retreat to safer games. So with that in mind, expect that your no limit opponents will be experienced Texas Hold ‘Em players. Easy strategies that work with novices may not work at this table. Be alert for new strategies against you as well.
Still, don’t let this scare you away. Eventually you’re going to want the thrill of more challenging games (as well as bigger jackpots.) When that time comes, No-Limit Hold ‘Em will be the game for you.
Good luck out there!
