The People Working at the Craps Table
When playing Craps out there on the street, you don’t have much time to think about all the formalities of the game, or playing with a professional dealer. At this point, all you are really concentrating on is rolling those bones for that big amount of money.
Even for those more tech savvy gamblers playing online there’s not much to think about in terms of a dealer After all, the dealer is just a computer, right? It’s just a collection of “1” and “0” numbers.
But, when shooting craps in a casino, however, you are on a different type of playing field – you have a specially trained staff at your disposal, and it will definitely benefit you to learn about them, which is the point of this article.
So what exactly makes up a Craps table staff? The staff is generally made up of four trained people who run the game. Comprising this team are a boxman, a stickman, and two dealers. To better understand these relationships to the game, let’s discuss the roles that each of these people have.
The Boxman is the one who keeps everything together. This is the person who handles the overall duties such as being the dealer’s supervisor, handling the playing chips, as well as the players themselves. Basically, the Boxman is the one in charge when it comes to playing Craps.
The Stickman is, in many ways, the Boxman’s second in command. The Stickman maintains and announces what is going on during the game. This is the one that is in charge of taking bets, directs the base dealers to pay the winners, announces the outcome of each dice roll, and (true to their name) uses a long, wooden stick to retrieve the dice from the center of the table (isn’t that nice of them?) Also, please note that despite their names, a “Boxman” or “Stickman” can indeed be a woman!
Finally, there are two Base Dealers. The “dynamic duo” stand on either side of the Boxman, where their primary responsibility is to collect and pay the player’s bets.
As you can see, there is more of a sense of formality when it comes to playing professional Craps in a casino. Each of these people work hard to bring you a fun and exciting gaming session, and also keep this fast paced game very organized. So next time you are at the table, be sure to drop them a solid tip, as they work hard to make your game fun.
