Spirit Mountain Casino, Mojave Valley

Mojave Valley, AZ, a small town just 3 miles from the California border, may not be the largest town in the state, but it’s proximity to California and its surrounding countryside make a regular stopping point in people’s travels in the region. Not only can you enjoy the dry, warm atmosphere, but the nearby lake provides for great recreation. Of course, there’s gaming, too, at Spirit Mountain Casino.

Open daily 24-hours, the Spirit Mountain Casino is small at 9,500 square-feet, but packs enough punch to hold you over if you’re on your way to Vegas or interior Arizona. Choose from nearly 500 gaming machines; there are traditional slot machines, video Poker, video Blackjack and more. However, there is no live gaming at Spirit Mountain.

You have a couple of options if you want to stay in Mojave Valley. They may not be the casino-resorts found in other parts of the state, but they’ll be plenty welcoming after a long day or night of driving. Two Best Western Inns – the Royal Inn and the Colorado River Inn – are located just outside of town. Both are affordable and clean. Though technically in California, these hotels are only 4 miles each from the casino and are both a day trip’s distance from Lake Havasu, the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.

The Spirit Mountain Casino does have a snack bar if you are looking for something light, like sandwiches, hamburgers or hot dogs, and though they don’t have their own restaurant, there are a few options in town to please your palate. Of course, there are the national fast-food stands – McDonalds, Carl’s Jr., Taco Bell and others, but there is also the Wagon Wheel, open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner and a favorite among locals. There’s also the Route 66 Café, which, along with food, provides complimentary wireless Internet access.

Guests of the Best Western Royal Inn can keep up with their fitness regimen at the facility’s Health Club, where there are some free weights, several Nautilus machines and two treadmills. There’s also a pool and a hot tub to relax those muscles afterward. Other activities can be had by venturing a block or two to the banks of the Colorado River, where the beach, boating and many other water sports await. Golf lovers will appreciate the pristine, 18-hole municipal golf course at the edge of town.

The most well known attraction in Mojave Valley is the Oatman Hotel, a reputedly haunted hotel that had once hosted Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. And if ghosts aren’t your style, take a four-hour day trip to Lake Mead, Lake Havasu or the Grand Canyon, some of the grandest natural and man-made ecological wonders in the world.
