The Blackjack Table
The Blackjack table…. What may look like an ordinary piece of gaming furniture to some is actually a battleground of wits, probability, and skill between those blackjack players and dealers who try to lay claim to that ever-elusive “21” (we make this sound like a poetic life or death struggle, don’t we? Well, truth be told, to many players, blackjack is exactly that!)
So what’s the difference between a Blackjack table and any other gaming table? It comes down to a matter of layout, position of players, and even the accessories that make up the table’s personality.
For starters, the table is a semi oval shape that usually accommodates up to six players (but can fit a seventh player). You can always tell where a player is meant to sit as there are little rectangles on the table for where the player’s cards go. Where the dealer sits during play is usually referred to as a “pit”.
Common things to find at a Blackjack table are the layouts on a table depicting the specific game elements (cards, bets, etc), chips and their respective holders, the shoe holders (where the cards are stored) or an automatic shuffler. There are even less game oriented accessories used to maximize player comfort at the table such as a drink holder or a cigar holder. Face it: When the game is going well, you are going to be at the table for a while. You may as well make yourself comfortable (although some would argue that a cigar is not comfort… but what do they know??)
Usually, there’s a sign at the blackjack table. These signs tell a multitude of information about the type of Blackjack game being played, ranging from the table’s minimum to maximum bets, the type of Blackjack game that is in session, and the rules of the game. This is an important factor, as it lets players know if they are sitting down at a table that is within their bankroll limit, and are playing a game that is within their skill and their budget.
It can also benefit a player to see how many people are at the table. The less people present means that a rookie can better learn how to play the game, and the expert player can better count cards without interference of other player probability.
Any experienced Blackjack player should be able to spot that ideal table from well across the casino floor. Once a player finds “their spot”, they can focus more on the important issues, such as making those winning plays and getting “21”.
Good luck!
